U.S. President Barack Obama’s reelection campaign is on the cusp of raising a record $1 billion for the 2012 election after posting its strongest fundraising month of the year in September.

The Obama campaign and the Democratic National Committee raised $181 million last month, falling just shy of the all-time monthly record of $193 million, which was set by the Democrat candidate in September 2008.

Having collected more than 10 million individual donations Obama’s fundraising efforts in 2012 mark “a historic record for grass-roots politics”, his Campaign manager Jim Messina wrote in an e-mail to supporters.

The average donation was $53, while 98 percent of the contributions were $250 or less and more than 567,000 contributors were those who gave for the first time, said the campaign, which had appeared to lag behind Republican challenger Mitt Romney only two months ago.

Meanwhile, Obama continued to hold his political lead over the conservative Romney albeit by a slim 2 percent difference, according to an online survey among likely voters.
