Goa: BJP demands special package for mining affected

Panaji, Oct 11 (RDI) Senior Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) leader Rajiv Pratap Rudy on Thursday demanded that the Central government should give a special package to the mining affected people in GRudy, who is on a brief visit to Goa, told reporters that thousands of people depended on mining are facing financial crisis after the closure of mining operations.

"It is a matter of great concern. The Centre should give a special package to ease the prevailing situation," the party spokesperson said.

Questioning the wisdom of the Ministry of Environment and Forests for keeping in abeyance the environment clearances, Rudy said that since workers should be protected as they are not responsible for the illegal mining.

Soon after the Justice Shah Commission report, which pointed serious illegalities and irregularities of over Rs 35,000 crores, was tabled in the Parliament, the state government suspended licenses of all mining leases pending verification.

"We are surprised that MoEF superseded the action of Goa government," he said.
